Direct actions
- Do not touch the object under any circumstances; retreat immediately to a minimum standoff of 300 meters (≈1,000 ft) from the item and keep others clear.
- Alert emergency services using the nearest public emergency number (911, 112 or local equivalent). Request police and an explosive ordnance disposal unit. Provide exact address, GPS coordinates if available, time discovered and a concise visual description (size, color, visible attachments, sounds, smoke).
- Establish a perimeter and prevent re-entry: instruct bystanders to move away along routes that increase distance from the object; use barriers, tape or vehicles if safe to do so at a distance.
- Avoid electronic transmissions in the immediate vicinity (mobile phones, two-way radios) until responders advise; step back before placing calls so communications occur well outside the perimeter.
- Evacuate structures via stairwells; do not use elevators. Direct evacuees to a predetermined assembly point at least 300 meters away and account for everyone.
- Preserve evidence: do not move items, do not clean the area, and keep witnesses separate to record contact details and statements for investigators.
- Follow responder instructions exactly when police or bomb technicians arrive; do not return to the area until clearance is given in writing or orally by an authorized officer.
Information to give responders
- Exact location and access points (entrances, stairwells, parking areas).
- Detailed time line: when it was first seen, who reported it, any observed movement.
- Visual indicators: approximate dimensions, color, presence of straps, wires, containers, liquids, or visible timers.
- Nearby hazards: fuel storage, crowded zones, critical infrastructure, public transport stops.
- Available surveillance: CCTV locations and footage retention times; names of witnesses and their contact numbers.
